Math homeschool curriculum

Math is the most-discussed subject in homeschool. Programs split along two axes that matter more than any other: mastery (Singapore, Math-U-See, RightStart) versus spiral (Saxon, Horizons), and problem-solving (Beast Academy, Art of Problem Solving) versus computational drill (Saxon, Kumon, Math Mammoth). UK families have a smaller set of native options (MEP, Galore Park, Maths No Problem) plus the US programs that ship internationally or sell as PDFs.

What a typical week looks like

Daily 30 to 60 minutes of focused work. Mastery programs stay on one topic until proficient before advancing; spiral programs cycle through topics in short bursts to reinforce retention. Most programs cover K through 8 in one continuous sequence; high-school math splits into Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus or AP options. Competition-track families add Art of Problem Solving textbooks and AMC preparation in upper-middle school.

Methods that fit this subject

Mastery (Singapore, Math-U-See, RightStart, Math Mammoth), spiral (Saxon, Horizons), problem-solving and Socratic (Beast Academy, Art of Problem Solving), video-led with self-pacing (Teaching Textbooks, CTCMath, Math-U-See), and adaptive online platforms (ALEKS, Khan Academy, IXL). Classical and Charlotte Mason households often combine a mastery spine with mental-math drills; gifted and engineering-track families lean toward Beast Academy through middle school and AoPS in high school.

What it tends to cost

Math is the subject with the widest price spread. Free programs include MEP (UK origin) and Khan Academy. Math Mammoth and Beast Academy are typically $50 to $150 per level. Math-U-See and Singapore Dimensions Math run $80 to $200 per level with manipulatives. RightStart's full kit is $150 to $250 per level. Teaching Textbooks and CTCMath subscriptions run $50 to $200 per year. Art of Problem Solving online classes are $300 to $500 per course.
