Who the publisher is

Family School comes from American Heritage School, an independent K-12 school in American Fork, Utah, which says it was founded in 1970 and that its curriculum draws on 55 years of academics. Family School is the online platform of AHS Worldwide, where the curriculum is hosted for homeschool, online school and virtual school families. The Family School web portal is where homeschool families access the curriculum directly; AHS Worldwide sits alongside it as the accredited, full-time online private school for grades 3 to 8.

The publisher's FAQ says that in a Character Core course faith is included in each lesson, with students making connections to faith through "scripture, Conference messages, hymns, stories, and so on." The publisher's home page says each lesson combines academics with Restored Gospel principles. In our assessment, a non-LDS family should read these pages before buying.

The core pedagogy

Family School's Character Core offering includes over 30 K-8 courses in history, science, literature, geography, art, and music. Math and language arts are offered as separate K-8 courses, I Master Math and I Love Language, per AHS Worldwide.

The instructional model is parent-led, with ready-made lesson plans. The publisher offers more than 1,000 ready-made, low-to-no-prep lesson plans. Each lesson comes in two lengths, a condensed 20 to 25 minute version or a full 45 to 60 minute version. StudentGo supplemental videos, included in the premium membership, supplement or substitute for the parent-led Character Core lesson, with an age-level video for each student.

Signature mechanics: (1) Character Core, over 30 K-8 courses in history, science, literature, geography, art, and music whose lessons combine academics with Restored Gospel principles. (2) Two lesson lengths, a condensed 20 to 25 minute or full 45 to 60 minute version of each lesson, per AHS Worldwide. (3) StudentGo videos, supplemental video instruction included in the premium membership, which can supplement or substitute for the parent-led lesson. (4) Multiple enrollment tiers, the curriculum is accessible through a free course offer, a premium license, a full-time online private school, or a part-time online private school.

What they do exceptionally well

Gospel integration for LDS households. For a Latter-day Saint family that wants their child's education to be of a piece with their religious life, not two separate tracks running in parallel. In our assessment, Family School is built for that integration. The publisher's home page says each lesson combines academics with Restored Gospel principles, and its FAQ says faith is included in each Character Core lesson.

Institutional stability. Family School is the platform of AHS Worldwide, which describes itself as a Cognia-accredited K-8 school. In our assessment, that institutional backing, an accredited online private school option (full-time grades 3 to 8, part-time K-8) if the family wants to convert from homeschool to online school, and continuity of support across years lower the risk of the curriculum disappearing or changing ownership midway through a family's use.

Free tier is genuinely useful. A free account lets a family choose one complete K-8 course at no cost; the free parent license itself includes progress monitoring but no curriculum library access (retrieved October 2026). In our assessment, the free course lets an LDS family try the curriculum before paying.

What they do poorly

An ongoing monthly fee. AHS Worldwide's plans-and-pricing page lists a premium license at $39 per month for the first license and $10 per month for each additional parent or student license (retrieved October 2026). The FAQ lists a premium student account at $39 per month for the first student and $10 per month for additional students; the full-time online private school for grades 3-8 is priced separately at $554 per month in nine installments for 2026-27 (retrieved October 2026). In our assessment, families should confirm current pricing on the publisher's plans-and-pricing page before subscribing.

Layered platform can confuse newcomers. The curriculum is hosted at FamilySchool.org, while plans, pricing, and enrollment are on ahsworldwide.org.

Who it fits / who it doesn't

  • Pick Family School if: your family is Latter-day Saint and wants gospel-integrated academics; you appreciate ready-made lesson plans and do not want to assemble a curriculum from scratch; you want access to an accredited online-school option if your homeschool plans change mid-year; you want a free tier to evaluate before committing.

  • Skip Family School if: you are not Latter-day Saint and expect to use the curriculum without the gospel framing (the publisher says faith is included in each Character Core lesson); you want a math-heavy, STEM-forward program (the publisher's K-8 math course is I Master Math, built on the Virginia State Standards); you want conventional textbook-and-workbook instruction rather than literature-based unit studies.

Cost honest assessment

AHS Worldwide publishes its plan prices on its plans-and-pricing page and in its FAQ (retrieved October 2026). The publisher lists a free account with one free K-8 course, a premium license at $39 per month for the first license and $10 per month for each additional license, and, in its FAQ, a premium parent account at $10 per month (retrieved October 2026). Full-time online private school enrollment through AHS Worldwide is a separate product at $554 per month in nine installments for grades 3-8 for 2026-27 (retrieved October 2026).

ESA eligibility notes

AHS Worldwide, the operator of the platform that distributes Family School, appears on the Arkansas Department of Education's Participating Service Providers list and, as American Heritage Worldwide, on Odyssey's list of vendors with approved offerings on the Utah Fits All marketplace for 2025-26 (both retrieved October 2026). AHS Worldwide's own Utah Fits All page calls American Heritage Worldwide an approved UFA Private School and Education Service Provider. The entries name the operator, not the Family School subscription, and we have not confirmed Family School as a product under any state ESA program. Families should verify with their program administrator before ordering or enrolling.

Alternatives

  • Walk Beside Me Learning (Covenant Path Academy), a family could look at Walk Beside Me instead of Family School for another LDS gospel-based curriculum (grades 1-8).
  • Good & Beautiful, a family could choose The Good and the Beautiful over Family School for a curriculum that, in the publisher's words, emphasizes family, God, high character, nature, and wholesome literature and requires no daily prep time.
  • Sonlight Curriculum, a family could choose Sonlight over Family School for a Christian homeschool curriculum organized by age into history, Bible, and literature programs.
