The mid-year swap: what re-teaching actually costs, and how to hand a resistant child a program he has already decided to hate
Issue 18 drew the line between ordinary settling-in friction and a curriculum mismatch worth acting on. This issue is for the family standing on the other side of that decision, the one that has confirmed the mismatch and now has to execute the swap: how much a new program actually costs in re-teaching versus how much it feels like it costs, how to introduce a replacement to a child who walked in already primed to resent it, and what a realistic first two weeks with the new material looks like. Six weeks in: telling a real curriculum mismatch from ordinary settling-in friction, and what can be swapped without losing the rest of the year

A child resists a subject every single day, a program that looked rigorous on the shelf turns into a nightly fight, or a parent quietly suspects the whole thing was the wrong choice. In our assessment, some of what gets read as a curriculum problem at week six is normal adjustment friction that resolves on its own. Some of it is a genuine mismatch that will not improve no matter how long a family waits it out, and waiting on that kind past a reasonable point can cost a semester a family did not need to lose. This issue works through how to tell the two apart, subject by subject, and what a mid-year swap actually requires versus what a family can fix without buying anything new. Plus the policy dispatch, on the federal tax credit guidance Treasury expects by the end of September and the scholarship organization list that North Carolina law requires its State Education Assistance Authority to publish.
Two prior issues in this dispatch, the one built for a family that chose its start date and the one built for a family that had no summer to plan in, each end with a routine running. Somewhere around the fifth or sixth week of a school year, a parent can start to wonder whether the curriculum itsel…
