Who the publisher is

The doctrinal position is conservative Anabaptist: non-resistance (pacifism), scriptural authority, plain dress, separation from worldly entertainment, and the Mennonite understanding of the believers' church. The publisher's stated purpose is "to supply Christian homes and schools with Bible-based textbooks and literature that impart truth and that in no way compromise the Word of God." This is not marketing language. It is operational policy.

Rod and Staff is not a school. It does not issue diplomas, grade work, or offer placement testing. It does not take online orders, families order by telephone or by paper mail, using a printed catalog. The core pedagogy

The model is direct: a student reads the lesson, works the problems, the teacher corrects. There is no discovery method, no Socratic inquiry, no unit study. Content is ordered by grade, subject is siloed, and mastery is expected before progression.

Scope and sequence is tight and traditional. English grammar is introduced in the earliest grades and built cumulatively, parts of speech, sentence diagramming, paragraph structure, composition, through grade ten. Arithmetic is taught by standard algorithms with heavy drill. Reading follows a phonics-first approach through the Bible Nurture and Reader Series in grades 1–4, then moves to anthology-style readers with devotional content. History and geography appear from grade 3 onward; science is light in the elementary grades and becomes more substantive in grades 7–10. The program ends at grade 10, reflecting the Anabaptist tradition in which formal schooling conventionally concluded at that level and apprenticeship or vocational work followed.

Signature mechanics: (1) Scripture integration, every Bible lesson is pulled from actual biblical text rather than paraphrase, and memory verses appear weekly across grades. Durability and internal consistency. Because most Rod and Staff titles have been in print since the 1970s or 1980s with limited revision, families using the program across multiple children can resell, reuse, and reassemble materials indefinitely. The second-child cost is almost nothing. A consumable workbook costs a few dollars.

Clear, direct prose. The textbooks are written for children who read at grade level, with no vocabulary padding, no sidebars, and no attempt to be entertaining. For families who find modern elementary textbooks overwrought, too many fonts, too many illustrations, too much marketing language. Rod and Staff's quietness is a feature.

What they do poorly

Theological saturation assumes the reader shares the tradition. The Bible and reading programs are written from within conservative Anabaptist theology, and the content appears throughout, memory verses daily, devotional stories in readers, history told with explicit attention to martyr traditions and Anabaptist pacifism. Families outside the plain-community tradition should plan to edit or substitute in subjects where Rod and Staff's worldview framing is densest.

Science. The science program is thin compared to the rest of the curriculum. Grades 1–6 emphasize nature study and biblical creation framing over laboratory method; grades 7–10 cover biology, physical science, and earth science with a young-earth creationist posture but relatively little hands-on lab work. Families who want rigorous pre-college science can supplement with Apologia, BJU Press, or a secular program by high school.

No high school. The program ends at grade 10. Families continuing through high school must transition to another publisher for grades 11 and 12, and college-bound students may need to add physics, chemistry, and higher-level math from outside sources.

Ordering friction. The mail-and-phone ordering model is a meaningful usability barrier in 2026. Two- to three-week shipping times, no online cart, and reliance on printed catalogs make the curriculum harder to acquire.
