Who the publisher is

Well-Trained Mind Academy is the online school associated with Well-Trained Mind Press, founded by Susan Wise Bauer. Bauer's The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home, first published in 1999 and updated through multiple editions, is arguably the single most influential book on classical home education in the United States. It introduced tens of thousands of parents to the trivium framework, the Story of the World history curriculum, the Writing with Ease and Writing with Skill composition sequences, and the broader Well-Trained Mind pedagogical approach.

Well-Trained Mind Academy launched in 2013 as the online instruction arm for families who wanted Bauer's pedagogy but could not credibly deliver it themselves — particularly in Latin, literature, history at the high school level, and advanced writing. The academy has grown steadily and is now a mid-sized online classical academy with a distinctive religiously-neutral positioning.

The Well-Trained Mind's religious positioning is deliberately neutral. Bauer is herself a Christian (Presbyterian) and does not hide it, but the curriculum is designed to be usable by secular families, Christian families across denominations, Jewish families, and religiously uncommitted families. Story of the World, Writing with Ease, and the broader curriculum do not impose theological frameworks; individual families add their own religious content as they choose.

Scale is meaningful. Our editorial estimate is that Well-Trained Mind Academy enrolls several thousand students annually. Because of the broad reach of The Well-Trained Mind book and the religiously-neutral positioning, the academy pulls from a wider population pool than most classical academies.

The core pedagogy

Well-Trained Mind Academy's pedagogy is neo-classical in Bauer's specific sense: the trivium structure (grammar, logic, rhetoric stages across roughly K-4, 5-8, 9-12), chronological history through a four-year cycle, serious literature read across that chronological cycle, Latin from elementary, formal writing through the Writing with Ease and Writing with Skill sequences, mathematics through calculus, and laboratory science. This is the pedagogy Bauer articulated in The Well-Trained Mind delivered through live online instruction.

Scope and sequence: elementary courses include Story of the World history (four-year chronological cycle), Writing with Ease composition, Latin, literature, grammar, and optional Greek. Middle school continues with Story of the World and Writing with Skill, more substantive literature, Latin through multiple years, formal logic, and pre-algebra/algebra. High school includes history through primary sources and Bauer's The History of the Ancient World / The History of the Medieval World / The History of the Renaissance World series, literature at Great Books level (adjusted for non-religious framing), rhetoric, advanced Latin or modern language, mathematics through calculus, and laboratory sciences (often in partnership with other providers).

Signature mechanics: (1) Well-Trained Mind pedagogy. The trivium structure, chronological integration, and Bauer's curricular philosophy. (2) Live small online classes. Typically 10-14 students per class with trained teachers. (3) Religiously neutral classical content. Great Books are read, Western civilization is taught, but without imposed theological framing — families add their own religious content if they choose. (4) Susan Wise Bauer's materials where applicable. Story of the World, Writing with Ease, Writing with Skill, Bauer's histories. (5) Accredited diploma pathway. The academy offers a formal diploma for students completing the full high school sequence.

A day in the life

A sixth-grader at Well-Trained Mind Academy on a full course load (Story of the World, Writing with Skill, Latin, math, literature, Greek or science) spends approximately 60-90 minutes in live class time per day and 2-4 hours of independent work — reading, writing, math practice, Latin exercises.

A tenth-grader at Well-Trained Mind Academy on a full high school load (history, literature, rhetoric, Latin III, math, science) spends 90-120 minutes in live class time and 4-5 hours of independent work. Reading load is substantial; writing expectations are real; Latin translation is demanding at this level.

What they do exceptionally well

Religiously neutral classical education. Well-Trained Mind Academy is one of a small number of academies that deliver serious classical education without imposed theological framing. Families who want classical rigor — real Latin, real Great Books, real writing — without specifically Reformed Protestant or Catholic theological integration find this academy uniquely positioned. Secular homeschool families, interfaith families, Jewish classical families, and religiously cautious Christian families all find fit here in ways they do not at Wilson Hill or Veritas.

Pedagogical coherence with The Well-Trained Mind book. Parents who have read The Well-Trained Mind and want the pedagogy delivered through live instruction find Well-Trained Mind Academy naturally aligned. The academy is not interpreting someone else's pedagogy; it is operationalizing the pedagogy of its own founding text.

Strong teachers. Well-Trained Mind Academy invests in teacher training and has built a teaching corps that includes many classical educators with degrees in their fields and real pedagogical commitment. Class quality is consistently strong.

What they do poorly

Not the right fit for families wanting explicitly religious integration. Families who specifically want classical education with strong Christian worldview integration throughout — where history, literature, and science are explicitly taught within Christian framework — will find Well-Trained Mind Academy less aligned than Wilson Hill, Schole, Veritas Scholars, or Angelicum. The academy is religiously neutral by design; families wanting integration need to add it themselves.

Premium pricing. Full Well-Trained Mind Academy enrollment runs approximately $4,000-$5,500 per year on five to six courses. Individual courses at approximately $700-$1,100. Modestly less than Wilson Hill or Veritas Scholars but still private-school-equivalent.

Accreditation is meaningful but less known than ACCS. Well-Trained Mind Academy's accreditation is recognized but less established within the classical Christian school network than ACCS accreditation. For families aiming at ACCS member Christian colleges, the accreditation distinction may matter.

Who it fits

  • Families wanting serious classical education without imposed religious framework
  • Families who have read The Well-Trained Mind and want the pedagogy delivered by live teachers
  • Secular, interfaith, Jewish, or religiously cautious Christian families seeking classical academics
  • Families pursuing accredited diplomas in a non-Reformed-Protestant-specific academy
  • Students who read and write at grade level or above

Who it doesn't

  • Families wanting explicit Christian worldview integration throughout
  • Families on tight budgets
  • Students who do not engage with classical content
  • Families preferring self-paced or asynchronous alternatives

Cost honest assessment

Individual courses: approximately $700-$1,100 per year per course. Upper-level humanities and Latin at the higher end; elementary subjects and introductory courses at the lower end.

Full enrollment: approximately $4,000-$5,500 per year per student on five or six courses. Sibling discounts typical.

Well-Trained Mind Press curriculum purchases (not academy enrollment): Story of the World boxed sets at approximately $50-$80 per year; Writing with Ease and Writing with Skill at approximately $40-$60 per year; Bauer's histories at approximately $25-$30 each. Curriculum-only families using The Well-Trained Mind as framework with Well-Trained Mind Press books can run the program for approximately $200-$400 per year per student.

ESA eligibility notes

Well-Trained Mind Academy is approved on most ESA marketplaces that handle online accredited education. Individual course and full enrollment fees process cleanly where online tuition is approved.

Alternatives

  • Schole Academy — a family would choose Schole over Well-Trained Mind Academy when they want Circe Institute pedagogy with broader Christian orientation rather than religiously neutral classical.
  • Wilson Hill Academy — a family would choose Wilson Hill over Well-Trained Mind when they want explicitly Reformed Protestant classical Christian education.
  • Self-directed Well-Trained Mind Press curriculum — a family comfortable teaching classically themselves would skip the academy and purchase Bauer's curriculum directly at a fraction of academy cost.

How we verified this

Our editorial team reviewed Well-Trained Mind Academy's course catalog at wtmacademy.com, sample syllabi, teacher credentials, and the relationship between the academy and Well-Trained Mind Press. We consulted Bauer's The Well-Trained Mind as the pedagogical backbone and discussion within the religiously-neutral homeschool community where the academy is most visible. Pricing is as of April 2026.
