Curriculum · 3rd–5th · Ages 8–11
3rd, 4th, and 5th grade homeschool curriculum
Third through fifth grade is when most kids move from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn. Math gets more procedural (multiplication, fractions, long division), history opens up as a multi-year cycle, and writing becomes its own subject. Families often swap out one or two pieces of their K–2 stack here.
What a typical day looks like
60–90 minutes of math and language arts per day, a weekly writing focus, daily independent reading, and a history/science rotation. Many classical programs enter their first trip through the four-year history cycle at this age. Science becomes more content-driven — life science in one year, earth science the next, and so on.
Methods that fit this age
Classical programs hit their stride here. Charlotte Mason stays strong with narration-heavy lessons. Traditional textbook programs (Abeka, BJU Press, Christian Light) are popular for families who want grade-leveled scope and sequence. Literature-based families keep reading aloud daily.
What it tends to cost
Complete 3rd–5th programs run $300–$700 for the year. Math specialists (Saxon, Singapore, Beast Academy, Teaching Textbooks) add $150–$250 per year. Writing specialists (IEW, Writing and Rhetoric) add $80–$200.
