Legal framework
Alaska Statute 14.30.010(a) requires a child between seven and 16 years of age to attend the public school in the district where the child resides, but subsection (b) lists exceptions. Under (b)(12) the requirement does not apply if the child is being educated in the child's home by a parent or legal guardian, and under (b)(10)(B) it does not apply if the child is enrolled in a full-time program of correspondence study approved by the department. Under (b)(1), the requirement also does not apply if the child is provided an academic education comparable to that offered by the public schools in the area through a private school with certificated teachers, tutoring by certificated personnel, or a religious or other private school program operated in compliance with AS 14.45.100 to 14.45.200.
