How to Start Homeschooling in Tennessee (2026)
Tennessee Code Annotated section 49-6-3050 governs home schools, including home schools operated through a church-related school as defined by section 49-50-801.
Legal framework
Tennessee Code Annotated section 49-6-3050 governs home schools. Home school students are given the state board approved secure standardized tests required of public school students in grades five, seven and nine, except that the test for grade nine is not the high school proficiency test required by section 49-6-6001. The section also addresses home schools that teach kindergarten through grade twelve where the parents are associated with, and the students are enrolled with, a church-related school as defined by section 49-50-801, supervised by the church-related school's director.
