How to Start Homeschooling in Nebraska (2026)

Nebraska allows a private, denominational, or parochial school to elect not to meet state accreditation or approval requirements by filing a statement signed by a parent, legal guardian, or educational decisionmaker with the Commissioner of Education.

Legal framework

Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 79-1601, a private, denominational, or parochial school that elects not to meet state accreditation or approval requirements must offer a program of instruction leading to the acquisition of basic skills in the language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and health. The election is effective when the Commissioner of Education receives a statement signed by a parent, legal guardian, or educational decisionmaker of each student attending the school. Rules governing the election are limited to procedures for receiving information from the parent, legal guardian, or educational decisionmaker.
