How to Start Homeschooling in Kentucky (2026)

Kentucky treats a homeschool as a nonpublic school. The Kentucky Department of Education states that parents must notify the local school district of their intent to homeschool each year and must keep attendance records and scholarship reports.

Legal framework

The Kentucky Department of Education states that a homeschool is a non-public school in which a family provides education to its own children. A parent who homeschools must notify the superintendent of the local board of education of the intent to homeschool within the first two weeks of the school year or within two weeks of withdrawal from the public school, and must resubmit the notification annually; the notification must include the names, ages, and home address of each child. The notification applies when the child is six years of age by August 1. Homeschools must keep attendance records under KRS 159.040 and scholarship reports documenting the courses completed and the grade awarded. Under KRS 158.070 and 158.080, certified homeschools must operate a school term of at least 1,062 hours of instruction in no fewer than 170 student attendance days per year; the department states that there is no minimum school term required for non-certified homeschools. The department states that it may not prescribe curriculum, teacher certification, or accreditation standards for homeschooling.
