How to Start Homeschooling in Colorado (2026)
Colorado law, at section 22-33-104.5 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, lets a parent establish a nonpublic home-based educational program by giving written notice to a school district, with a standardized test or evaluation of the child's progress at grades three, five, seven, nine, and eleven.
Legal framework
Colorado Revised Statutes Section 22-33-104.5, as described by the Colorado Department of Education, requires a family that homeschools to: (1) give the local school district written notification 14 days before the parent or guardian establishes the homeschooling, and resubmit it each year; (2) provide no less than 172 days of instruction, averaging four instructional contact hours per day; (3) have the child take a nationally standardized achievement test in grades three, five, seven, nine, and eleven, or have a qualified person evaluate the child's academic progress. Subjects include communication skills of reading, writing and speaking, mathematics, history, civics, literature, science, and regard for the constitution of the United States.
