How to Start Homeschooling in North Dakota (2026)
North Dakota requires a parent to file a statement of intent with the superintendent of the school district of residence at least five days before beginning home education and once each year thereafter. A child receiving home education takes a standardized achievement test in grades four, six, eight, and ten.
Legal framework
North Dakota Century Code Chapter 15.1-23 requires a parent intending to supervise home education to file a statement of intent with the superintendent of the child's school district of residence at least five days before beginning home education, or within fourteen days of establishing the child's residence in a school district, and once each year thereafter (15.1-23-02). A parent may supervise home education if the parent holds a high school diploma or a general educational development diploma, or meets the requirements of section 15.1-23-06 (15.1-23-03). Instruction must cover the subjects required by law to be taught to public school students for at least four hours each day for a minimum of one hundred seventy-five days each year (15.1-23-04). The parent keeps academic records (15.1-23-05), and a child receiving home education takes a standardized achievement test while in grades four, six, eight, and ten (15.1-23-09).
