How to Start Homeschooling in Oregon (2026)

Oregon requires the parent, legal guardian or private teacher to notify the education service district in writing when a child is taught at home, and the child is examined at grades 3, 5, 8 and 10.

Legal framework

Oregon Revised Statutes 339.030 excepts from compulsory school attendance children being educated in the children's home by a parent or legal guardian. Under ORS 339.035, when a child is withdrawn from a public school to be taught by a parent, legal guardian or private teacher, the parent, legal guardian or private teacher must notify the education service district in writing; the education service district acknowledges receipt of the notification in writing. A child taught this way is examined at grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 in accordance with the section and its rules.
